Modernising public transport

New buses, new-generation bus shelters and online services: a more comfortable, simpler public service.

01Background

An ageing bus fleet and basic waiting facilities were undermining the experience of public transport users.

02Objectives

To renew the fleet, improve facilities for passengers and simplify formalities for motorists.

03Results

The Bus Modernisation Scheme enabled the replacement of 319 buses in Mauritius and 9 in Rodrigues, backed by Rs 328.3 million in grants, and was opened up to hybrid and low-floor buses. One hundred and ten new-generation bus shelters were built by mid-2019, and a passenger information system was commissioned. Since November 2018, road tax can be paid and the tax disc printed online.

04Impact

Public transport that is more comfortable, more accessible and better integrated with the arrival of the Metro Express.
