Ratifying the African Continental Free Trade Area

In September 2019 Mauritius ratified the agreement creating the world's largest free trade area by number of countries.

01Background

Operationally launched in July 2019, the African Continental Free Trade Area aims to integrate the markets of fifty-four countries.

02Objectives

To position Mauritius as a platform for trade and investment between Africa, Asia and Europe.

03Results

On 30 September 2019, under the responsibility of the Ministry of International Trade, Mauritius ratified the agreement and deposited its instrument on 7 October. It became the twenty-eighth State Party and the first to ratify since the operational launch.

04Impact

Mauritian businesses are among the first positioned to benefit from the African continental market.
