After the Wakashio, a stronger partnership with Japan

01Background

The Japanese bulk carrier Wakashio ran aground off Pointe d'Esny on 25 July 2020; the resulting fuel oil spill caused serious marine pollution. Japan dispatched three teams of experts.

02Objectives

To secure Japan's lasting commitment to environmental restoration and to supporting the affected communities.

03Results

On 13 December 2020, Nando Bodha received Japan's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Toshimitsu Motegi, in Mauritius, together with the Ministers of the Environment and of the Blue Economy. Talks covered maritime safety, environmental restoration, fishermen's livelihoods, economic cooperation and reform of the United Nations Security Council.

04Impact

The Japan–Mauritius partnership was raised to ministerial level and turned towards the blue economy and maritime security in the Indian Ocean.
